Nigerian Researchers Discover Sustainable Energy Solution
On August 20, 2025, our university’s research team announced a groundbreaking discovery in sustainable energy, unveiling a cost-effective biofuel derived from local agricultural waste. This innovation, developed by the Faculty of Engineering and Environmental Sciences, promises to reduce Nigeria’s reliance on fossil fuels while empowering rural communities.The research, led by Dr. Ngozi Adebayo, utilizes cassava peels and maize stalks to produce a high-efficiency biofuel suitable for household and industrial use. “This solution is not only sustainable but also leverages Nigeria’s abundant agricultural resources,” Dr. Adebayo explained during a press conference at the university’s innovation hub. The project, funded by a grant from the Nigerian Renewable Energy Agency, has already sparked interest from local energy firms. On August 15, 2025, our university launched an exciting partnership with Google to deliver a comprehensive Digital Skills Training Program for students, staff, and the local community. Hosted at the university’s ICT Centre, the initiative aims to equip over 1,000 participants with in-demand skills in coding, digital marketing, and data analysis.The program kicked off with a workshop led by Google trainers, focusing on web development and cloud computing. “This collaboration empowers our community to thrive in the digital economy,” said Prof. Chinedu Okoye, Dean of the Faculty of Computing, during the opening ceremony. The six-month program offers free access to Google’s online learning platforms and hands-on mentorship. Students like Aisha Bello, a third-year computer science major, are already benefiting: “Learning to build apps has opened new career paths for me,” she shared. The initiative also includes a job fair to connect trainees with tech employers. This partnership underscores the university’s commitment to bridging the digital divide in Nigeria.
